My experience at Rapture Surf Camp Padang in Uluwatu, Bali

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

The decision to go surfing was very spontaneous when I arrived in Bali and watched the surfers on the beach of Canggu. My longer trip now allows me to try things spontaneously and take my time for it. I decided on this specific surf camp based on a personal recommendation from a German traveler who worked there for a while as an intern and raved about this surf camp.

I took a cab from Canggu to Padang Padang and arrived at the camp after about 2.5 hours of driving.

Tip: If you need transportation between 2 coastal towns or places near the coast, also look at possible boat connections. This saves time in some cases and would have been cheaper in my case.

When I arrived at the surf camp, I was shown around the area - the camp is beautiful and cozy. At the restaurant there are two large wooden tables at which we always eat together. Immediately following is the chill area with loungers and beanbags which immediately merges into a beautifully designed pool area surrounded by plants.

The rooms are small, but clean and functionally furnished. I stayed in a twin room, so shared the room with a stranger. WC and shower was outside the room and was shared in this case with a total of 8 people.

In the surf camp there was a quite structured daily routine. On days when you wanted to go surfing, you had to get up at about 5 o'clock, at 05:30 there was breakfast and at 6 o'clock was punctually meeting point for surfboard handover and then departure to the beach. For surfing there were 2 sessions of 2 hours each day. At noon or early afternoon we returned to the hotel. In the afternoon we had the option to join a yoga session and from 19:00 we had dinner together. This structured common daily routine makes it very easy to get to know the other people, to talk to them and to find connections. And at the latest a common round of UNO connects. 😊

The food at the Cap was also incredibly good. At breakfast you could choose between many different options and also lunch and dinner were varied and there was always a good vegetarian option.

In addition to the permanent local staff, there were interns (currently during my stay from various European countries) who are contact persons for all inquiries. They were always present and a part of our group.

The surf units were always on different beaches depending on the weather and ability. We always waited for the weather situation until the evening before deciding which surf group would go to which beach the next day.

I had 2 surf days during my stay at the camp, so a total of 4 sessions. My 1st time surfing was very exciting (almost too exciting) and I have already described this experience in a separate article. After this 1st day, I then allowed myself a "rest day" at the pool the following day and only went surfing a second time the following day. The second surf day was very similar to the first day, except that I could already "read" the waves a little better and I recognized slight progress. I learned a lot in a short time - and I will never be able to go to a beach again in the future without trying to define what kind of waves are there right now. 😊

After these 2 surfing days I have sore kneecaps and some toes on the board, I got a deep wound on the foot by the reef and was generally totally exhausted, I decided to stop surfing for the time being.

The staff there said that unfortunately I had very difficult conditions for my first surfing attempts and I should definitely try again when the conditions are more suitable. I don't know yet what my surfing future will bring - but if I make another attempt, you will read about me.

I enjoyed the camp as a whole and can highly recommend it. Even if you can't (or don't want to) surf every day, it's an optimal place to relax and enjoy. The group of people from different countries and from absolute surf beginners to professionals has grown together super and I had a lot of fun there.

Have you ever spent a vacation in a surf camp? What was your experience? 😊
