Arugam Bay - the surfers hotspot!

This place lives from tourism. From my observations, there are 2 types of tourists here. On the one hand those who just want to relax and lie on the beach and on the other hand surfers - Arugam Bay is an absolute surfer's paradise because of the high waves. And at the same time, these high waves make it difficult for the "relaxed beach goers" to swim comfortably in the sea.

When you walk through the town, there is actually mainly the busy main street, which is suitable for strolling around. On the side streets are mostly the hotels near the beach, but otherwise there is not really anything to discover there. It's nice to take a walk and try some cafés (see local recommendations) or to rummage in the stores for souvenirs. However, if you have not come here for surfing, 1-2 days are enough in my opinion to stay in Arugam Bay.

Restaurant recommendations for Arugam Bay

Bambini`s Café

When we walked along the main street, we noticed a restaurant, which could have won the competition of the restaurant with the most lights here in Arugam Bay - the Bambini`s. We wanted a change from the local cuisine and ordered burgers - they were very tasty. The prices were (as I think almost universally in Arugam Bay) already so halfway to the European level. As a goodie, there was the action that you get a non-alcoholic drink for free when ordering a burger - so a clear recommendation for Bambini`s! 😊

Feel the Waves

Looking for a breakfast place right on the beach, we came to this place. It is very inconspicuous hidden behind a lot of beach chairs and was not even marked on Google Maps when we were there. The breakfast menu here has a very international feel to it. We opted for a dish of avocado bread, egg, potatoes and grilled vegetables - the portions are large enough and we liked it very much.

A tip: Just in front of this restaurant is a beach section with very nice shady sunbeds. For the equivalent of 3€ we could use the sunbeds for the whole day. It was an ideal place for us, because we had comfortable loungers, shade, drinks and toilet - so everything you need for a chill day, where you do not want to move much.
